Therapy for Children
Our Services for Children
At the Centre for Psychodynamic Insights, we provide Psychodynamic psychotherapy for children under 12 only within the context of family therapy. We recognize that a child’s emotional well-being is deeply interconnected with their relationships, especially with parents and caregivers. Our approach helps children express their emotions, process experiences, and navigate challenges while also working with parents and caregivers to create a supportive and understanding environment.
Why Do Children Need Psychodynamic Therapy?
Children more often express emotional struggles through behaviour, play, and interactions rather than verbal communication. Psychodynamic therapy helps uncover underlying feelings, fears, or conflicts that may not be consciously understood. Our psychotherapists works with both the child(ren) and their parents or caregivers in order to help facilitate emotional development, improve communication, and strengthen relationships.
How Does Therapy Work for Children?
Since children often communicate through behaviours and interactions, Psychodynamic therapy incorporates these methods to help them process emotions and experiences. Sessions may include:
Techniques to explore feelings and conflicts symbolically.
Discussions with parents or caregivers to understand the child’s experiences within the family context.
Observations of family interactions to identify relational patterns that impact the child’s emotional health.
Key Areas of Focus in Therapy for Children
Emotional Regulation
Helping children understand and manage their emotions in healthy ways.
Attachment and Family Dynamics
Exploring early relational patterns and strengthening secure bonds.
Behavioural Challenges
Addressing difficulties such as aggression, withdrawal, or anxiety-driven behaviours.
Grief and Loss

The Role of Parents and Caregivers in Therapy
Because a child’s environment significantly shapes their emotional development, our work always includes parents or caregivers. We provide guidance to help caregivers understand their child’s needs, improve emotional expressions, and create a safe and supportive home environment. Family sessions may focus on:
Strengthening parent-child communication.
Exploring family dynamics and attachment patterns.
Helping caregivers recognize and respond to their child’s emotional needs.
