Registered Psychotherapist
Initially trained as a clinical psychologist abroad, I possess a deep understanding of how emotional and mental health struggles can impact people’s inner and social lives. Having been a patient of psychodynamic psychotherapy myself, I know firsthand how overwhelming it can sometimes be. Over the last decade, my background and experience have encompassed individuals from all walks of life, leading me to recognize that our internal world often takes precedence over many of our external circumstances. I am also familiar with the challenges that immigration brings, from the feelings of displacement and the longing for a home to the journey of finding my inner home.
If you have faced deeply rooted dysfunctional life patterns, distressing early experiences, or long-standing emotional challenges, this may be the right approach for you. Our past is not simply ‘painful memories’ that contribute to our state of mind, they may become our state of mind. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is my approach because it allows me to work with you as a unique individual rather than simply focusing on symptom reduction. Through this, I help my patients uncover and understand the unconscious aspects of themselves to resolve inner conflicts and alleviate present-day difficulties. I will listen intently to understand what you are experiencing within the context of your life and try to understand what internal conflicts may exist. My goal is to help you feel unstuck and develop a better capacity to work with the emotional distress you are experiencing. By going beyond patterns that don’t help you anymore, you can develop the freedom to lead a life with a greater sense of control and stability beyond patterns of fear and distress.

Sessions with Aastha
From the moment our work begins, everything you share, including your moments of silence, is important to me. In our first session, I place emphasis on what has brought you to therapy and why you chose to do so at this time. We will explore your background and what you believe has shaped you to be the person you are today. This, like all sessions, is a place for you to express yourself freely without censorship, from thoughts, feelings, and memories, to images, dreams, and daydreams. The pace of sessions is your pace, not mine, where I follow you along to explore what comes to your mind in this collaborative, safe environment. By starting in the here and now, we begin working on helping you express yourself in an unfiltered and undefined manner.
As our work deepens, things may start to feel overwhelming as we explore untapped areas of the mind and the factors that influence current symptoms. This exploration may shed light on the depth of your unhealthy defences and their impact on your daily life. Since defences are deeply rooted mechanisms we use to cope with emotional pain, they won’t be easy to abandon simply because we recognize how unhelpful they are. It takes time to discover new ways of being that go beyond the unhealthy defences that shape us.
The change that comes within may feel substantial, as it comes from your observed understanding of yourself in therapy. This makes It possible for you to be more comfortable with yourself and develop increased awareness and tolerance for the uncertainties life may present.
