OHIP Coverage
OHIP Coverage at the Centre for Psychodynamic Insights
The Centre for Psychodynamic Insights offers select OHIP-covered medical services for eligible patients in Ontario. These services are provided by licensed physicians and may include psychiatric assessments, mental health medication consultations, neurology services, and family medicine services.
OHIP coverage applies only to eligible medical services for patients who are physically located in Ontario and have a valid Ontario Health Card. Psychiatric assessment and neurological services require a referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner before an appointment can be scheduled. Referrals for family medicine are not required.
In addition to OHIP-covered medical services, we offer ongoing psychodynamic psychotherapy to patients across Canada. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is not typically covered by OHIP, but may be covered or supported through private insurance, personal funds, Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB), the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP), or IVAC, depending on the patient’s eligibility and coverage.
Services Covered by OHIP
Psychiatric assessments are covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario patients when provided by a psychiatrist. These appointments may help clarify diagnosis, symptoms, treatment needs, and whether psychiatric medication or other forms of care may be appropriate.
A referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner is required for psychiatric assessment services.
Mental Health Medication Consultations
Mental health medication consultations may be covered by OHIP when provided by a physician. These consultations can help patients explore whether medication may be appropriate for concerns related to mood, anxiety, attention, trauma, sleep, emotional regulation, or other mental health difficulties.
Medication consultations may include a review of current symptoms, medication history, side effects, treatment goals, and possible next steps.
A referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner is required.
Neurology services may be covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario patients when provided by a neurologist. These services may support patients experiencing neurological concerns that affect mental health, cognition, functioning, or overall well-being.
Neurology appointments may involve assessment, diagnostic clarification, treatment recommendations, and coordination with other medical or mental health providers when appropriate.
A referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner is required for neurology services.
Family medicine services may be covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario patients when provided by a family physician. These appointments may help patients access medical support, referrals, medication review, and care coordination related to their mental health and general health needs.
Family medicine can also play an important role in connecting patients to psychiatric, neurological, psychotherapeutic, or other specialized services.
A referral is not required for family medicine services.
Who Is Eligible for OHIP-Covered Services?
OHIP-covered services are available to eligible Ontario patients with a valid Ontario Health Card. Patients must be located in Ontario at the time of the appointment.
A referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner may be required before an appointment can be booked.
Referrals
Some OHIP-covered services at the Centre for Psychodynamic Insights require a referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Referrals help ensure that the appropriate medical information is provided before the appointment and that patients are directed to the service that best fits their needs.

Psychotherapy and OHIP
Psychodynamic psychotherapy provided by psychotherapists, psychologists, or social workers is not typically covered by OHIP. However, the Centre for Psychodynamic Insights offers psychodynamic psychotherapy virtually to patients across Canada.
Patients interested in psychodynamic psychotherapy do not need a referral and may book a consultation directly with one of our clinicians.
